The first Nike Air Max sneakers is AM1, designed by Dink Hayfield and Nike's CEO Mark Parker in the year 1987. The initial purpose of AM1 was to try their best to bring runners the best effects of vibrating-reducing and its solution is to enlarge the air cells inside the shoe sole. This new type air cells are very big. Them even stretch to the edge of the sneakers. Therefore, the designers removed the sole interlayers partially to get an outside air cushion. AM90 has a 20% bigger air cushion than AM1. The bigger air cushion window and the wider shoe body have made the sneaker heavier. In order to make up this disadvantage, Hayfield decided to make the shoe surface with lighter materials: new style model and clasp hole technique have brought runners with more choices and a whole new feeling which has never been experienced before; more plastic fittings and the mixed colors which stretches from the cushion to the shoe surface have given the Nike Air Max 90 a "fast" appearance. Hayfield has also divided the shoe cushions into two areas: the front and the back in order to choose them according to the materials.
"It's to design a really excellent product that we're adopting this method", Hayfield said, " and the products that are designed must be outstanding and could tell a sight story which is different from all others."
